Honouring our teachers
Rita would like to acknowledge Hilary Cinis (Sydney), Alexis Yael (Toronto), and Fiona Macpherson (Canberra) who contributed significantly to her learning in Tribal Style bellydance, as well as those teachers who challenged her ferociously in other styles like Roula Said in her style of gypsy in Toronto, Casey Keed in contemporary and Liz Lea in Burlesque at the Canberra Dance Theatre. I have drawn from a range of teachers over the years (I hesitate to name them all in case I forget one) including through workshops - for tribal, i would particularly like to acknowledge Devi Mamak, Carolena Nericcio, Jill Parker and Rachel Brice for inspiring me in those important early days. ODC in San Franscisco was instrumental to opening me to other genres. The teachers through the Brisbane Contemporary Dance Intensive at Expressions Dance Company have been influential in the past two years of studying, as have workshops with various contact improvisation and performance artists.
